Ayers Island is located in Penobscot County in the Penobscot River, near the town of Orono. The island is named after Joshua Ayers, one of the original Orono settlers. Ayers had constructed a sawmill on the island in the 1770s.

The Striar Textile Mill is located on the island and is on land that is polluted due to past manufacturing activity. The mill closed its doors in 1996 and the Town of Orono took over ownership of the land three years later.

Rumor has it that a worker accidentally died at the mill and it was under mysterious circumstances. A young girl was also murdered by her father - and they are both said to haunt the location.
